i think what bothers me the most about ian’s/alex’s twitter rant about “fandom mob mentality” is the group that is going to benefit most from it.

like, it won’t be the young kids out there who are inadvertently drawing rose skinny, drawing different character pairings, drawing weird crossovers, or who are creating swarms and swarms of OCs (which i assume/hope is who ian/alex were talking about in reference to their tweets) because yes, they should absolutely be free to draw any of these things without feeling threatened.

but nah, the group that is going to benefit most from the “draw whatever you want uwu” attitude is going to be those who have been drawing child porn/incest/purposefully hurtful art since day 1 and are now completely validated in doing so and shutting down those who are opposed

i mean, it’s not as if there was anything really stopping them in the first place (aside from the handful of times reporting them has worked) and i doubt there’s going to be a sudden jump in any of that stuff being drawn.

but ian’s/alex’s message is still benefiting the wrong group and exacerbating a complex situation rather than discussing it and/or quelling it. “just do whatever lol” dismisses those who (rightfully) feel uncomfortable in a space that promotes child porn and validates those that have been drawing/reblogging it. plus they both know that tacking on “just go outside lol” at the end of their vague rant wouldn’t do anything to move the conversation forward so here we are.

I literally got nothing to add because this sums up all my feelings towards those tweets

uh except I don’t think kids should be free to “inadvertently” draw Rose Skinny??

like I’m sorry but drawing thin limbs and flat stomachs is not an “honest mistake” it is deliberately avoiding drawing someone who is fat because they cannot process that someone as beautiful as Rose Quartz might actually be fat!

everything else in this post is fine, I just strongly feel the need to bring this up.

I know you mean well but most kids just learning how to draw can barely have a grasp on where limbs should go, let alone how body fat hangs off a figure.

Yes, media by and large has a problem with depicting fat women and this problem is also persistent in most easy-to-access drawing books, but by no means does any of this fault lie on the kids just learning the material.

Like, have you seen how your typical “How to Draw Manga” addresses bodies?

I mean what kind of teenage girl looks like THAT? Buuuut, as inaccurate as these books are, they are easy to obtain and most parents buy them for their kids because they’re just trying to support them getting into a good hobby.

And I know this because THIS is how I first learned how to draw. I’ve been overweight my whole life and as much as I wanted more fat characters in my stories, it was hard for me to draw them at first! I drew hundreds of skinny people before getting to a fat person that looked human and not inflation art. Hell, I drew that same generic face/pose up there for an entire school year before I decided that maaaaaybe I should try to learn more.

Like, you have young kids same-facing and same-bodying not because they dislike diversity or because they have some anti-fat agenda, but because they’re just kids learning. I mean, if you have an industry professional doing this then it’s a clear mark on THEIR attitudes and THEIR lack of skill because they HAD the time and they HAD the school to learn better.

The 35 year-old animation major should know how draw a variety of people. The 11 year-old tween should just keep practicing.

Don’t shame the poor kid and don’t villainize them. Link them to tutorials and resources for chubby characters. I seriously doubt these kids mean any harm and are just trying to show appreciation for the character in their own way.
