Advice for the beginning artist!!! -using a limited palette helps you avoid overworking your piece. Think of coloring and drawing as two separate exercises. You can excel at one and do poorly with the other. The more limited your palette, the better understanding you will have of value, light and shadow. -DRAW FASTER!! Scribble, gesture, freehand draw. Draw a lot from life without looking at your paper. Drawing is 90% looking. The faster you sketch the more used to it you become. -BE MESSY. Because you are learning, trying to be neat only slows you down. You can always clean up later. Don’t be afraid to start messy. -Avoid getting accustomed to styles until you feel like you understand drawing from observation. Styles are a kind of hindrance. Getting stuck and fixated with one is murder- and in the end all style is just a kind of exaggeration of a real thing. You gain everything from observation. You don’t gain anything from style except that one style.
